W16 PartB Reading Notes Golden State

Reading notes are from “Golden State” by Frank Bidart

  • Pink velvet and rosary around his hands... rouged... he was prepared for an open casket funeral.
  • He looks like he did when they were married, that’s a bit depressing.
  • Wow, the last gf is kinda outdated, but the drinking issue is understated.
  • Unhappy wiTh money, typical.
  • A life insurance payout? Was the booze hurting their finances?
  • Bakersfield, the armpit of California.
  • A good analysis? Mental health issues?
  • Did the wife have no attraction to her husband?
  • Marriage would be better if it weren’t mixed up with sex... that’s a strong statement.
  • Divorced... and begging for the mom back, definitely the best thing he ever had, but could t keep
  • Jung is a famous psychologist. Interesting to read a single one though and take it to heart.
  • The husband is incredibly needy, explains why they’re richer after death.
  • Has a bit of a jealous streak too.
  • A wish of insight... simple but deep.
  • A year before he married another girl... so attached to her.
  • The letter is a reply after his death... some sort of therapy I guess.
  • So long since she’s written a letter...
  • Girl, your psychiatrist doesn’t like you, he’s paid to act like that.
  • Turning to prayer when times are hard, unsurprising.
  • Wow, life is over if you married Shirley, she was too young, a gold digger...
  • Shame shame, not taking your meds as a diabetic, that’s how you die.
  • Poor Ruth, returning to him almost dead.
  • Must unlearn is strong but true, you have to unlearn a lot after a bad relationship.
  • 10k is a lot of money in 1963... that’s a lot of cattle to buy
  • And she wanted more school, but it was wasted on booze... sad.
  • You can trust an alcoholic, they’ll lie just to get their next drink.
  • Staring at the photographs and reliving the good times, depressing.
  • They had an awfully sad relationship. Almost star crossed lovers.

  1. Hi!
I like how you bullet point everything, sometimes depending on my mood I will also do bullet points because it just makes sense! I wish I read this short story because it sounds interesting but I suck and missed it. It seems like there is a lot going on from it sounds like, a funeral? This is set in the 1960’s when people drank freely throughout their day, so alcohol was a common thing. This seems like a soap opera kind of setting going on, I really need to read this haha
