Week 8 Reading and Writing

Looking back:

The reading and analysis feel good to me. They don’t take too long to complete and I’ve really enjoyed some of the readings. Going in depth in the more powerful parts of the stories of the close readings feels like a good way to share how I felt about a piece to the class too. I’ve really liked the past three weeks readings the most, they’ve been interesting or just really intense reads that you can feel how the author wanted to you to. Some of them are more fun, but some also show parts of California’s history that we often try to hide, especially some of our very ugly stuff. The class project has been alright, but I feel like it’s a bit difficult for me to have a writing piece I’m really solid on and happy with. It’s more of a content forwards it, but I wish I was a bit stronger with it since it felt a bit shakey, so I hope to improve with the next project. My biggest accomplishment is a hard one, I guess enjoying what I write about is pretty good for me after years of writing about books I was apathetic about.

Looking forward:

I think to get more out of the readings I just need to maybe do reading notes on the stories people point out in their analysis that were particularly good. It might help inspire me for a project and point out some things I might of never noticed myself. Using other people’s perspectives is a good way to reapproach a story and take the most you can out of it.

  1. I agree that the readings and analyses were good. I myself get overwhelmed looking at the weekly tasks however, after taking the time to do them, they honestly don't take that long to do. A thing i may suggest also, after writing your reading notes, and perhaps before your weekly analysis, go and read the notes written by fellow classmates. That way you can gather information to support your paper that you didn't catch before.
I also recommend keeping the analysis at the back of your head as you read. If this week you know you have to do a literary analysis then start trying to find themes and devices in text. If you are trying to do a close reading, start highlighting in your book or mentioning a quote in your notes passages that sparked interest or spoke to you that way you can refer to it later. I HOPED THAT THIS HELPS!!!!
