W9: Project Action Plan 2
Prompt: Choose a reading.
In your project, consider the following:
What does this work reflect about its historical, social, political and/or economic context? You may focus on race, class, power, cultural values and beliefs, historical events, the author’s biography, gender, psychology, etc.
In this prompt I’m going to need to find in on a reading that has a more significant difference from today’s society to be able to take the historical or other contextes strongly in my writing. I’m unsure if focusing on all those ideas in general would be possible, but based on what ideas I have now it most likely will be half of them, and I can break it down based on those ideas.
Readings:
I’m really liking The Californians by Aetherton right now for this topic. This one is my top choice for the topic, and probably for sure the one I’ll stick with. The differences in society and how the girls act and are treated make it excellent for this topic to talk about, and I feel I can strongly approach several points of view, including power, gender, cultural values and more.
If I don’t go with that reading, looking at the readings from week 6 or week 8 might be possible contenders. I really feel deadset in my brain that I want to do the other reading.
Literary Devices:
Since the project focuses on the refelection of its history or social context, I’m going to need to focus on how the author emphasizes, or even has a lack of emphasis on certain details. That will point out the norms of society, especially in the authors point of view. In this one, focusing on language conventions over sentence format will be better, since I’m not looking at any prose and most of what I would read for this should be more of a story, and most likely not one with a moral or theme of the whole story.
Possible Outline:
- Introduce the reading and author?
- Discuss my topic and establish my thesis
- Discuss the historical context, mini paragraphs focusing in on the mini themes: gender, power, cultural values, etc; Use supporting sentences from the story to supplement and elaborate on how each supports my thesis.
- If I need to add more to my project, then I’ll discuss the Social context, and approach in the same way as the historical, and supplement to support that differing context.
- Conclude by restablishing my thesis and how I supported it with my body paragraphs.
Thesis in progress?
In The Californians, Aetherton establishes the historical context and its differing views from us by the use of gender roles, positions and use of power, and what the society values as their culture as acceptable.
Hi Michelle,
ReplyDeleteI really like how you approach your project plan and discussed gender and political issue especially women and rich people in our society. Gertrude Atherton describes this girls as innocent, naive on the reality of being poor in our society. Atherton showed that Magdalena and Helena were excited to see burning building and amazed on the fire that engulfed the poor city of San Francisco. Atherton also wants us to reflect on how society treats people different, in politics of rich people and politic of poor people. The police treated Magdalena and Helena differently because their fathers were influential people in San Francisco.
Thank you
Ginalyn
