W10 Part A Reading: Mori
Reading notes are from various short stories by Toshio Mori, pgs. 583-592
The Woman Who Makes Swell Doughnuts
The Woman Who Makes Swell Doughnuts
- The woman he visits already sounds like a happy grandmas house, and I didn’t need the second paragraph to know that.
- She’s lived a very long, busy life.
- Fresh doughnuts in a comfy house sound great, fresh doughnuts in general are a real treat.
- Everyone calls her “Mama”, she’s the neighborhood grandma for all the kids, probably a good safe influence for them, and also a bit of cultural influence.
- It’s peaceful that they can sit and enjoy the sounds of the city.
- She lives on through the many memories they shared, it’s warming to share the experiences.
The Eggs of the World
- Matoi is an interesting sounding character, he sounds snake like.
- Is Hasegawa is a shop owner? That’s what I implied based on carrying many types of imported sake.
- Inside an egg, sounds like he’s living in a safety bubble? That’s what I can get out of this metaphor.
- Broken from within, definitely sounds like it’s something like you need life experiences, or your too naive or something.
- And now he got the sake he was planning, mostly probably to shut him up, but he obviously did that on purpose.
- A sober and drunk at the same time man, that puts together the thoughts of his behavior well.
He Who Has the Laughing Face
- Oh, sounds like a person who puts on the happy mask for the world, because the sad one isn’t acceptable...
- The author notes a lot of people are like this, but we don’t take notice, I feel that’s very true.
- Sitting out in the park many days, maybe he was recently unemployed? Maybe he just takes his lunches there. We don’t know yet.
- Now we know what he does, it’s part time work, hence the free time. It’s nice that the author was concerned about him though.
