Topic Brainstorm 2
Choose one short story or novel excerpt. Write a piece in which you explore the following:
- In what ways could this story be considered an artifact of history?
- What does this story teach us about history?
- How does a story teach us about a time or place differently than a history book?
This topic would be interesting now that we have read a lot more stories with a historical influence on the pm that’s notable. There’s already several stories I can think of that would be usable in this topic, making it quite adaptable. I think I would be able to atemept this topic well by using the project pieces as paragraph dividers, but I would definitely need to use outside resources to help supplement this one most adequately. Summarizing the story and explaining each bit might be a bit tedious in this topic.
Choose a reading.
In your project, consider the following:
What does this work reflect about its historical, social, political and/or economic context? You may focus on race, class, power, cultural values and beliefs, historical events, the author’s biography, gender, psychology, etc.
I like this topic still since it’s really adaptable to our readings. What stands out to me now would be readings from our Mexican or Chinese-American authors. Those readings would be great for this topic, especially since they had such impressionable stories and really emotional. I’m not sure if I would only focus on the race aspect though, since that may be a bit too little of a project. So including power or the author also can be good maybe? This topic would be one I would have to pinpoint more before attempting it.
Pick a subject: love, work, freedom, etc. Then choose two selections and discuss how that subject is discussed in those selections. Use literary devices to help frame your discussion.
This topic stands out for the love subject. I feel that writing about that with two different kinds of love based stories would be quite strong. I also have a really good idea of one story for sure to use, but which would to discuss along it would be a little tricky since I don’t want it too different or similar. This would probably need me to go back and look at readings and strengthen my ability to pick out literary devices, which I feel I’m a little weak at.
