Topic Brainstorm

Choose a reading. In your project, consider the following:
What does this work reflect about its historical, social, political and/or economic context? You may focus on race, class, power, cultural values and beliefs, historical events, the author’s biography, gender, psychology, etc.”
I like this topic since it seems good to do as we get more into a nonfiction based fictional reading so that you can reflect why the author chose to write this. A lot of that type of story tends to be a social commentary to the current status quo, so it seems like a fitting topic. I also like to look into the different social and cultural values in historical writings and contrast it, and evaluate them to us and for the time it was written.

Think about a theme you see running through your life (failure is the best lesson, love is eternal, etc). Choose a reading that you think also discusses this theme (even if it reaches different conclusions about it). Explore connections between how the theme plays out in your life, and how the theme gets played out in the reading.”

This topic seems really good when you can effectively view a common theme happening to yourself, as you can maybe relate more to that reading, and even find an answer to a problem in the reading. It’s always a bit easier to get interested in a reading when you can relate more deeply with it, so it’s a good topic since it’s easier to write about a reading you like or feel a lot of emotion to.
From a piece of fiction (short story, section of novel, or a play) choose a female character on whom to focus, and create a project that discusses some of the following questions:
  • What is the author’s attitude towards her? (how can you tell?)
  • What is your attitude towards her?
  • How do (at least 2) other characters view her?
  • How does she view herself?

This is a really nice topic if you’re interested in how female perspective changes based on author, and then the culture current norms. Viewing a reading with a female character is very different from a female author to a male author, and even more so from an older story to more recent. The trend of a strong female lead is very modern, so it’s good to compare with that, and even look at some of the stereotypes we still see in them today.
Choose a reading selection. Then choose one of the following questions, and write an argument in response to it:
  • How does the work reflect the period in which it was written?
  • What does the work reveal about the cultural behavior contemporary to it?
  • How are class differences presented in the work? Are characters aware or unaware of the economic and social forces that affect their lives”

This topic is good for if you really just like reading to have a peek into how life was like in x time. Sometimes you might not understand or even know how another person lives, but reading books by those people allows you to step into their shoes and get a glimpse into the life. It’s interesting to point out how things may be different from us, and what trials and tribulations they have to go through in life at that time and place.

  1. Hi Michelle. I enjoyed reading your discussion about some possible topics to write about. I agree with your perspectives about why each choice would be interesting, especially your comments about how it is interesting to analyze a piece of fiction who it relates to a theme important in your own life. I look forward to seeing which topic you choose first.
