Reading Part A “The Naming of Santa Ana and Los Angeles”
Notes for “The Naming of Santa Ana and Los Angeles,” by Crespí, pg.78-81.
- I wonder what a measurement of a “Varas” is, is it closer to miles or meters?
- Great flooding river in Southern California, I don’t know any today with a similar description.
- Friendly native Americans again, I hope they stay peaceful with them
- Pinole must be a very important jewelry for the natives
- Pinole is also a name of another city in California, any resemblance with that?
- Many earthquakes they experiences, very expected if they’re near the fault line.
- Lots of antelope, do we still have a lot, I feel like it’s more deer now.
- Another native tribe with Pinole, maybe they were clansmen of the first, or it was something of value to trade in the area.
- Wild grape vineyards, very California and foretelling to what the area will become in the future. It must of been pretty to see it in its wild glory.
- “The soil is black and loamy” very important as we are now a huge agriculture hub, and it was acknowledged for its abilities this early on.
- Banks with herbs and watercress, a lot of wild herbs grow after a good rain here.
- Volcanoes and they found the tar pits, “bubbling... certain substance like pitch...” it very much sounds like the tar pits of Southern California, I wonder if they were brave enough to put anything inside of them.
