Reading Part A “A Frontier Lady” by Royce
Reading notes are for “A Frontier Lady” by Royce, pg. 136-140.
- Another Oregon trailer, it appears her adventure is a bit away from the norm however.
- Harsh snow and it was only October 19th, usually now it’s pretty dry still then in the Sierras.
- Oh, she even came up through probably historic Tahoe/Truckee/Reno if she came up into the Sacramento Valley.
- Morbid a bit to be traveling and pass dead horses so close to your destination.
- I wonder how far Col.J was from where she was in the Sierras, since it took her two days to get there.
- That’s very scary to get ambushed at night by the native Americans.
- Pleasant Valley, I wonder if that relates over to closer to here perhaps? We do have pleasant hill and Pleasanton now. Also many people went near San Francisco for the gold.
- Back to Sacramento, they do quite a bit of travel through the central valleys, thank goodness it’s october. It would been quite unpleasant in the summer.
- Building their own house on the settlement is very exciting, but difficult to find all those supplies I imagine.
- Opening a store is also very exciting for the time, they probably had little competition and a lot of customers.
- She mentions the change in behavior near a woman, does this imply that in their area there was very few of them and a rare sight?
- She mentions the people who learned they had to toil a lot more than expected for their gold, this is something a lot of people who came later in the rush did not expect and made it hard to live out there.
